Barnwell man charged after setting own vehicle on fire

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)— The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents charged Rusty Dale Peeples, with arson and insurance fraud on Feb. 24.

The 46 year-old defrauded an insurer by setting fire to his own personal property, say officials.

According to authorities, on Dec. 2020, the defendant reported to the Bamberg County Sheriff’s Office that his vehicle was stolen from his residence.

The vehicle was later located in Olar, South Carolina and found to be on fire.

The defendant admitted to setting his own vehicle on fire due to mechanical issue and withdrew his Farm Bureau insurance claim, say officials.

Peeples was booked at the Bamberg County Detention Center.
