Searching for Fake Auto Insurance Policies in Central Florida

On May 30th, the NICB Central Florida Major Medical Fraud Task Force conducted a Fraudulent Insurance Card-Uninsured Motorist Operation with the following law enforcement agencies: Polk County SO, Department of Insurance, Lake Wales PD, Lake Alfred PD, Auburndale PD, Bartow PD, Florida Highway Patrol, Lakeland PD, and the Hillsborough County SAO.

Insurance Card Operation

Twelve insurance companies participated in the operation including: Bristol West, Esurance, Farmers, Gainsco, Geico, General, Liberty Mutual, Mercury, MetLife, Sentry, State Farm and USAA. Member company SIU investigators had their company laptops available for verification of insurance policies.

Insurance Card Operation

All law enforcement agencies conducted traffic stops for various violations. During the traffic stop a review of the owner’s registration, active warrants, license information and the status of the driver’s insurance card information was conducted. Upon receiving the insurance card information, the officer would dispatch the details to the personnel in the center. Member companies would review the policy information to determine if the insurance policy was valid and active. Once reviewed by the SIU, this information would be dispatched back to officers at the scene.

The following results were obtained from this operation.

  1. Traffic Stops - 659
  2. Total Citations Issued - 344
  3. Speeding Citations - 165
  4. Verbal Warnings - 290
