STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The sharp rise of catalytic converter thefts continues to trouble New York City as NYPD precincts on Staten Island are warning drivers to remain vigilant and protect vehicles from the persistent trend that has plagued the borough this year.
NYPD data shows 2,170 citywide catalytic converter thefts have been recorded through Oct. 24, compared to 501 thefts through the same span last year. Staten Island-specific data was not immediately available, an NYPD spokesman said; however, the borough saw 28 thefts through early summer — more than double the total recorded all of last year, the Advance/SILive.com reported.
